What's the difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

Dietitians are the only regulated nutrition professionals in Ontario. "Dietitian" is a protected title, just like "nurse" , "massage therapist" , or "physician". Dietitians are regulated by the College of Dietitians of Ontario. Dietitians are required to at minimum complete a 4- year degree in Nutrition, in addition to completing their post-graduate dietetic internship. After this, they must pass the Canadian Dietetic Registration Exam (CDRE), and meet continuing education requirements as outlined by their regulatory body.

Nutritionists are not a regulated profession in Ontario. This means that anyone can use the title, and education and experience levels may vary.

Some Dietitians may have "Nutritionist" included in their job title such as "public health nutritionist" , "sports nutritionist" or "community nutritionist" depending on their area of work. In these cases, they may be considered both a "Dietitian" and a "Nutritionist".

Do Dietitians write meal plans?

Yes, some dietitians may choose to create customized meal plans for clients based on their goals, health needs and food preferences.

What can I expect in my first session with a Dietitian in Ontario?

An initial assessment involves a comprehensive review which typically includes...

  • Nutrition and medical history

  • Training schedule review

  • Review specific goals including health, performance or body composition

  • Personalized recommendations you can start using right away

You will leave with clear recommendations based on your needs, not a generic template.

What are the benefits of seeing a Dietitian?

There are many benefits of seeing a dietitian. Some may vary depending on the specific service provided:

  • Personalized Recommendations based on your goals: Dietitians can translate nutrition science into realistic goals, and create a realistic nutrition plan for clients.

  • Provide education and resources: Dietitians can provide practical resources, and "bust" nutrition myths to help people make informed decisions.

  • Improved strength and athletic performance. Dietitians with a background in sports performance nutrition can create custom nutrition plans to help athletes improve their performance and recovery. Some specialized areas may include weight cutting for weight-class sports (ie: powerlifting, wrestling, olympic weightlifting, etc), contest prep for competitive bodybuilders, and nutrition plans for endurance events. Some dietitians work with large sports teams including hockey and football teams.
